Q: Why don't my hosts appear in the top part of the Preferences Panel?
A: That's probably because your Macs are not on the same subnet. Since teleport uses Bonjour, they have to be on the same subnet.
Alternatively, this can be caused by this pr4 issue, that has a workaround.

| It might also be that the computers have the same name in the System Preferences > Sharing > Computer Name. Rename your computers, then re-login for changes to take effect. |

I have tried all the posted work arounds but still I cannot see the shared computer.
When I first installed the program it worked wonderfully. This morning it does not work no amount of reinstalling, sharing, name changing or anything else has worked. |

Teleport used to work, but doesn't anymore? Or, nothing connects? Whenever I've had a problem using Teleport, the culprit has always been that one or both Macs has lost their IP address.
To check this go to:
system preferences>network>network status
Preferably, you should see that your chosen connection is active, and may have a self assigned IP address. If it doesn't have one, highlight that connection, be it ethernet, Firewire, or however you connect the two Macs and click configure.
Under the TCP/IP tab, chose to configure IPv4 manually and type in something like
169.254.74.100 for the IP address and 255.255.255.0 for subnet. Click apply now. Do the same for the other Mac, except use a different IP -- 169.254.74.101. |

| The problem can also be in Bonjour -- I just solved a similar issue here by reactivating various Network ports until Bonjour was on the preferred network. When it doubt, go to Network prefs and make sure that all of your port connections are turned off *except* the one you want to force for teleport. Once that connection is made, you can reactivate those ports. |

More thoughts on troubleshooting Bonjour:
On Panther, Bonjour is called Rendezvous.
To test using iChat (you can probably do this with iTunes or iPhoto sharing, but I haven't done it that way):
- Turn off firewalls on both machines.
- Perhaps disable Little Snitch temporarily. For me, Teleport works with Little Snitch activated, but just in case...
- Open iChat on both machines, create accounts if necessary, and:
- 10.4 (Tiger) - File -> Preferences -> Accounts, you should see an item under the Accounts list. Click on it and make sure these are checked: Use Bonjour ... and When iChat opens, automatically log in
- 10.3 (Panther) - iChat menu -> Log In to Rendezvous
- You should now see new windows for Bonjour and Rendezvous in the respective iChat apps. If not, go to the Window to open those windows.
- Make your status on both machines "Available".
- You should now see the account from the other machine as "Available" in each window.
- If not, try these things:
- Toggle status in both iChats.
- Make sure iChat Bonjour and iChat Rendezvous are both enabled in the Firewall ports. Shouldn't matter if your firewall is turned off, but just in case.
- Quit / reopen both iChats and set status to Available.
- Restart computers, reopen iChats...
Other things to try:
- Try setting both machines to use DHCP connections.
- There are reports that it's finicky between different OS versions. Make sure all system updates have been performed.
- Turn on Personal File sharing and connect to each machine from the other to awaken the connection between them (there are reports that some routers will drop inactive connections between machines).
- In Activity Monitor (Applications -> Utilities), make sure the mDNSResponder process is running on both machines (should be under the root user).
- Make sure you enabled the Teleport firewall ports as described in the manual.
- Restart computers after making changes...
